The Habs were looking pretty set to head into the regular season with one of the best looking offences in the league. But apparently their forward core still wasn't adequate enough for them.
"It was tough" said GM MacPherson regarding the trade. "Brady has been a core member of our squad the past 3 years, trading him away was not easy. but ultimately it sets us up nicely for a great shot at a cup. There are not many wingers in the league we would consider trading Brady for, Meier was one of them ultimately". Meier is a physical player, he is just not as physical as Brady, but his offensive game far surpasses his. "Meier will pile up the points on our 2nd line which at this point looks to be with Bergeron and Duchene. We think that line has the potential to do great things". An added bonus of the Meier deal was the Habs reacquiring their 1st in this years draft, which will likely be used on another upgrade.
Meier wasn't the only add to the Habs forward group this week. The Habs also traded away Clutterbuck for draft capital in one deal, and brought in Nick Paul in a trade and Evan Rodrigues via ufa. Both these players have untapped upside in the Habs management groups opinion and could be great pieces not only this season, but the next few seasons as well.
Overall the Habs feel like their group is one of the top contenders in the league, only time will tell.
