4.2.7 Restricted Free Agents
a) All players that are aged 27 or under at the beginning of a signing period and whose current GVFHL contracts have expired will become Restricted Free Agents (RFA);
b) RFAs must be qualified at 100% of previous GVFHL salary / NHL salary (whichever is higher)
c) Any RFA that does not get qualified will become an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA);
d) RFA contracts cannot be less than qualifying offer;
e) RFA contracts are based on NHL contracts in term and cap hit (unless previous GVFHL salary is higher):

Example:
Jonathan Toews is a RFA. According to capfriendly.com he is signed 1 more year for $6.3 million. Since he is signed 1 more year in NHL, he can be signed for 1 year @ 6.3 million.


f) RFA players who have signed an new NHL contract before but not after the RFA
Resigning period has begun will use the extension to calculate the new GVFHL contract;

Example:
Patrick Kane is a RFA. According to capfriendly.com his current contract is on its last year for$4.3 million and his next contract is for $7 million for 7 years.

His current season cap hit is added to his new cap hit and the average over the term of the contract is the new cap hit.
(4.3 + 7 + 7 + 7)/4 = 6.325
So Patrick Kane can be signed for a 4 year deal @ $6.325


g) Teams can extend RFA contracts by one extra year for 25% more (not valid for 4 year contracts):

Example:
Jonathan Toews could be signed for 1 year @ 6.3 million OR 2 years @ $7.9 million.


h) RFA cap hits and term options will be provided to General Managers in a spreadsheet during the qualifying period.
